Dental health is very important for children. Those who don’t brush their teeth on a regular basis are at risk of health complications both as a child and as an adult. These health issues include plaque buildup, tartar, gum disease and cavities which can affect diet, appetite, heart health and even self-esteem.

So how can you get your kids on board and make brushing their teeth a health habit? Here are three helpful tips:

  1. Brush your teeth at the same time.
Let your child watch you brush your teeth to help convince them to do the same. Leading by example will make it seem less like a chore or punishment. Also, they’re likely to copy your behavior.
  2. Let your child pick out their own toothbrush.
Make a big deal out of a special shopping trip so they can pick out their own toothbrush. It’s safe to say they’ll find one they like, since many children’s toothbrushes are themed with popular cartoon characters and superheroes. Be sure their choice has the American Dental Association Seal of Acceptance which means it’s been reviewed and approved by dental experts.
  3. Make it a fun activity.
Find a fun song to play when you’re brushing your teeth together – make it your tooth brushing song! Take turns brushing each other’s teeth. Maybe your child wants to brush their stuff animal or doll’s teeth before brushing their own. Look for any way to make the experience of brushing their teeth something to enjoy!
